What happens in a split system clean

Stage 1
Filters
The mesh panels that clip out of the front of the unit. By the time they come out they are usually grey with dust.
Stage 2
Coils
The wall of thin metal fins behind the filter. Dust gets past the filter and settles here, and it turns black. It gets washed down until you can see the metal again.
Stage 3
Fan barrel
The long round fan behind the coil that pushes air into the room. It is the grottiest part of the unit and the one nobody ever sees, so it gets washed down too.
Stage 4
Internal components
Everything else inside the unit gets cleaned while it is open. That is how the mould, dust and bacteria buildup comes out, not just the dust on the front.
The return air filter fills up too
On a ducted system, the return air filter in the ceiling catches the dust for the whole house, and it comes out looking like a grey blanket. The vents in each room are the grilles the air comes through.

It depends on how hard the unit works. A unit that runs most of the day, a home with pets and humid Gold Coast weather all mean dust and mould build up faster. If it smells musty when it starts up, or the vents look dark, it is due.
Cooling pulls moisture out of the air, and that water sits on the coils. Add dust from the room and a dark, damp spot inside the unit, and mould has everything it needs. A filter rinse does not reach any of it.
Per unit, and the more units you have, the better it works out. Each additional unit at the same property is $135, cleaned on the same visit. The first unit is from $195. Split systems and ducted are the same rate.
Yes. On a ducted or in ceiling system the internal unit, filters, vents and key components get cleaned. It is the same rate as a split system.
